I've never really taken time to see the hard hitting exposées of Dateline; but this one was pretty interesting.
General thoughts:
- The whole underground exchange of information and its effectiveness is pretty impressive.
- I'm a little surprised at the simple yet sophisticated methods credit card scammers use to collect their merchandise: Not only preying on specific people for drops, but sending off packages to random sites as red herrings.
- The guy at the end is pretty gutsy, sticking around well after the cameras are exposed. I would have bolted.
It was a little hard to take some of it seriously with the constant sensationalist and melodramatic tone but at least that made me laugh.
Particular areas that gave me a chuckle:
- Identifying different countries where credit card transactions are taking place and zooming into stock footage of said countries - Thailand: picture of a river with a person using an ox to till.
- Constantly reiterating exactly what Dateline had done, was currently doing and was going to do - Yes, CH Delivery is something you made up. We get it.
- The huge leaps in logic - Dateline checked Australia but there was no record for Dr. J. Jack: an obvious sign that Wendy is part of a much larger INTERNATIONAL IDENTITY THEFT CRIME RING
- The voice over used for "Wendy" - purposely using a particular leading accent and implying another identity for Wendy and changing the voice over mid sentence to match
