I had a weekend jaunt to Toronto for Lisa and Derek's wedding. Congrats and happiness to the both of them.Great to see friends again though there wasn't nearly enough time.

Post-Reno Party!
After a year of grueling labor - well, many months of misjudgement of how much time renos actually take (with commensurate working schedule) followed by some months of grueling soulbreaking labor... Let me start again: After a year of grueling labor, Moyse and Borough have come to the light at the end - The Project is done and listed.
All that's left now is to complete the other bookend that started with the Pre-Reno Party.

London Business School Toronto Meet-up #4
It's officially meet-up #4 but as far as the MBA2009 students from other countries are concerned, it might as well have been meet-up #1000...The good times keep on rolling with the LBS Toronto meet-up at Turf this past Friday. Excellent choice as we've all demonstrated that we enjoy the occasional wager. The food was rather nice, I appreciated the NY striploin. It was a pleasure meeting some of the spouses too.
Now, as I'm an Asian blessed with reasonable expression of the native form of the aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme and a good ol' Albertan upbringing, I do enjoy the occasional beer and will attempt to keep up the pace with anyone - especially German friends. While I may not always succeed, but I'll always give it the good college try. Well, another challenger stepped up Turf night which made for an impressive start to the evening. What was even more impressive was with the 14(!) rye and cokes on my good buddy German's tab. While I'm a little insulted that he's been holding back on me this entire time, I can't help but bow down to the master.

Peter & Jennifer!
In the second of my back-to-back weekends of weddings, Pete and Jen tied the knot this past Saturday.Pete and the guys started the wedding weekend Thursday before the wedding. It was supposed to be a simple dinner but devolved quickly as Pete completely obeyed the one rule we set out for him that night: He was not to refuse any drinks. I'm duly impressed with his performance that night, even if Pete doesn't remember anything that happened after dinner. What's even more impressive is what a trooper he was the day after. Pete had to perform for a tea ceremony as well as run a bunch of other errands. All he had was a little dehydration first thing in the morning. Absolute trooper.
The wedding day started out with lots of sun which made for some gorgeous pictures around OSA, Whyte Ave and the Japanese Gardens at the Devonian. About an hour before the outdoor ceremony though, the clouds started rolling in. We made a last minute call to go to the rain backup, which was definitely the right thing to do given how it poured. Friends and staff pulled together with the wedding party to facilitate the move and setup. Who knew that rented tuxes could be completely drenched and look good 10 minutes later? The ceremony was nice. It was amusing seeing Jen's expression every time there was a thunderclap or when anyone mentioned what a lovely day it was.
Immediately after the ceremony, we streaked over to Dynasty for the reception. Chopstick relays for wedding games were amusing. Pete and Jen dominated all challengers. Awesome MC job by Ray, Three little girls band was talented and the personal Ad during Herm and my speech got big laughs. Great start to a new life toghther!

Edit: Pictures from my Dad's camera are now up. After removing a few blurry ones a grand total of 177 photos... My Mom said the number he snapped is probably worse than if I were to get married.

Anna & Liam!
Congratulations to Anna and Liam! The ceremony over the weekend was absolutely stellar! I'll have to say the reception could have used some work though. They had these two bozos as MCs, it was absolutely DISGRACEFUL how unprofessional they were.This was really the first time that I've been as involved with something for very close friends. It was an intimate affair which kept it casual but lively. Tons of highlights from the day (in no particular order):
- The kiss at the ceremony – way to dive in there Liam!
- The couple's first dance – Choreographed perfectly – They could have taught Fred and Ginger a thing or two!
- All the wonderful heartfelt speeches from all the members of the wedding party! I'm not ashamed to say I teared up a bit.
- Glass clinking – Hope we didn't embarrass you, Evan...
- The slide show by the photographers – a lot of great picture choices and great shots!
- Me barking orders at George and Andy and being greeted by looks of disgust – I'm so ready for management.
- Lime Stewarts and how the Hotel MacDonald went out specifically to find Southern Comfort for us – Best Lime Stewarts I've had!
- The fantastic jazz quartet and the professional dancers filling the dance floor
As the most brilliant couple I know, I know you two will be great in San Francisco! All the happiness in the future!

Admits Weekend 2007
It's Admits weekend at London Business School. Last year, this was the weekend that made me know I absolutely had to be at LBS. It's too bad I'm in Edmonton for the week, though having friends getting married this weekend and next will be fun.Details are still being hammered out, but promotion for the Third Annual Flat Hunters' Pub Crawl is starting. Toronto LBS Meetup 3
Another strong showing on Friday night by Toronto London Business School admits.Big thanks to the Crazy German for organizing and everyone else for getting out.
The Toronto admits are a great mix of personalities and diverse backgrounds. Someone commented (and I agree) that there are fewer finance admits in our group than would be expected. Most people around the table were from industry - nearly half of us were engineers. I wonder what the trend looks like with the rest of the Admits?
The Savoy turned out to be a reasonable choice. Truth be told though we were keeping the restaurant lively. Strange for a Friday night. My guess would be that the place attracts more of the theater crowd. Savoy is probably better as a secluded place for a more intimate dinner. Didn't matter to us though. My filet mignon was superb. Conversations flowed like the beer; There was a lot of information sharing and good natured ribbing. In reality, we're all still pretty much strangers to one another. Doesn't feel anything like it though - you'd think we were old friends if you heard any of our conversations. After a few hours at the restaurant, we had had our fill and decided to move elsewhere.
To shield ourselves from the pending disappointment of the Raptors, we decided to hide out at the Fifth. Our group didn't have enough members of the fairer sex to make it worthwhile for the club, which would have meant waiting for an hour. Luckily, the bouncer did happen to recognize our good friend Sir Robert Borden. With his street cred, we skipped the line. I had a pretty relaxed time there. Company was good, music was good, drinks (up until midnight) were good. We were all relatively tame but I can see potential for gong shows when we're out in London.
Those left of us at around 2 ended the night with a walk to Burrito Boyz. Arrival was quickly followed by the stark realization that we no longer have University metabolisms and after a night of drinking another 3000 calories weren't going to do anyone any good. We called it a night and went our separate ways. I'm looking forward to our next get together.
On a totally related note - If anyone in London Business School admissions is reading this, I'd really appreciate if we capped the number of MBA2009 students to between 318 to 324. There are pints for the Adcom if it helps push decisions in my favor in any way.

Étranger Non Plus
Brunch at Czehoski with LBS some admits and alumni yesterday was great! The feeling of the brunch was different compared to the one I attended as a waitlisted student last year. As a waitlist attending admit events last year, I felt like a little bit of an outsider. It's not that anyone made me feel like one - more of a personal distinction. This time was nothing like that. Just a relaxed time with some interesting people.I had the eggs benedict with brie. I swear that anyone who even caught the slightest glimpse of the hollandaise sauce or the croissant that supported the structure must have gained weight. My heart still isn't beating quite right after eating it.

The Party
The Pre-Reno Party turned out rather well. Thanks to everyone who could make it out. Amidst the hilarity, there was:- Amazing feats of strength - Terri is officially the strongest woman I know, single handedly lifting up person after person.
- Strip poker - Contrary to what my pictures would indicate, the wrong person lost. No offense intended, Adam. You'll always be my brother.
- The human pyramid - Followed with Winnie taking the most spectacular spill that I've seen in a very long time.
I've also had the worst customer service I've experienced from a scientific company. Out of the numerous calls I've made, I've only had two positive experiences. In one of the less positive ones, in searching for a price for a part, I was transferred twice. The first time from a woman who firstly snapped that she could only help me if I had a part number, which I didn't have unfortunately because I couldn't find it on the website. She transferred me to the parts department, who could not help as it wasn't that particular person's product. So he, in turn, transferred me to the PF2D specialist. He promptly hung up on me after telling me the part number so that I wasn't able to transfer back to the pricing woman.
My latest annoyance is that I just found out that they charge $30 for a Beckman tech to e-mail me a PDF version of a product's instruction manual. This actually ends up costing them money in the long run - think of the number of relatively minor service calls that could be avoided if people had a manual around to answer simple questions. Less service calls equals less staff paid to handle the existing call volume. Not like it matters to them though, customer service seems to be the last thing on their mind.
Finally, in the world of my television, Heroes is turning out to be a wicked show. I was a little turned off initially because of the corny dialogue, cheesy flying effects and Ali Larter's special power of having multiple personalities. It's really winning me over with every subsequent episode though because of Ali Larter herself, the interesting ways the characters are using the powers, the special effects that they use for Hiro's time stopping power and how badass Hiro looks as a time travelling teleporting ninja from the future. Yatta! (やった!)
